Western Sydney University

This 3 story University is split into two modules with a central boulevard acting as a thoroughfare and a space to hold events.

The boulevard gives access to both blocks by a series of exposed stairs and lift cores integrated within the internal facing façade.

Block A, houses the research labs. Block B, houses the lecture rooms, study rooms, recreational facilities, staff quarters and the Cafeteria.

With direct access to public transport, the university is designed as a vehicle-free, pedestrians-only campus. The site contains a parking zone for bicycles, and further extends the use of eco-friendly vehicles with e-bike charging stations located at the north and south entrance.

Creating a sense of botanical tranquility, the surroundings are awash with dense trees and lush green sub-tropical flora. These dense areas are designed to shade people wishing to study or relax outdoors, whilst staying cool from the humid weather.

The gently undulating timber atrium roof harnesses the rhythmical movements found in the natural world. The curved form is positioned in sharp contrast to the flat internal-facing façade.

The atrium roof is interlaced with elliptical shaped sky-lights made from TUFFAK 15 polycarbonate sheets. The frosted-satin finished sheets disperses sun light and softens the intense mid-day solar glare.
